A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in a six-story apartment building in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, killing two children and one man.

The fire was reported at 12:27 p.m. on the top floor of the building. Fire fighters started to arrive four minutes later, and managed to get the fire under control at 12:57 p.m. Nearly 70 firefighters and 12 engine and ladder companies responded to the complaint.

The two children and adult were taken to Kings County Hospital in critical condition. They were later pronounced dead. Their names have not yet been released pending an investigation.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire.

The building has been inspected a half-dozen times this year following complaints about the elevator being out of operation.
