Adopting the site of 70′s haunt The Village Gate, Le Poisson Rouge has been designed by musicians, for musicians and professes to be focused upon “serving art and alcohol” in equal measure. Indeed walking through the atrium, one is instantly struck by the oddity of such art. With a precarious looking fish tank dangling from the ceiling, the naming of the establishment is fairly apt. First impressions might convey L.P.R to be another indie-specific band venue, however the real allure of this 700-person music hall is the sheer diversity of headlining acts. Past acts have included Debbie Harry, Florence and The Machine, Raekon and Stevey Reich, however Poisson Rouge is also known for being the host of N.Y.C Winter Jazzfest, a celebration of funk, blues and soul-fusion jazz that always pulls in a crowd. Drinks are reasonable, however “happy hour” sees prices cut by nearly a third.
