In New York City, big doesn’t cut it if you’re looking for a restaurant that will cater for half the Midtown populace in one sitting, and Tao on East 58th is no exception. Housed within a former movie theater; the great expanse of space has been revamped with the construction of an ominous 16-foot Buddha, giant paper lanterns, several wooden balconettes and a host of cavernous lounge sections for waiting diners. You don’t have to wait long, as service is partly what sells the reputation of this super-restaurant. The menu is as expansive as the interior, described by many critics as “experimental, modernist Asian cuisine”. Forget your Chicken Satay. For a real taste explosion, let your palate do the decision making as you peruse Roasted Shishito Peppers with Yuzu, Lobster Wantons with Shitake Ginger Broth and Dragon Tail Spare Ribs. Tao is also known for specialty cocktails such as the Love Potion No. 9 and Bamboo Gingerita – best for after dinner, as the taste contrasts could prove to be too much!
