Giuliani Decided Not to Run for Governor

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani has decided not to run for governor next year, after months of contemplating a candidacy.

Giuliani would have been the strongest potential candidate, and would have a real shot of winning, so this news comes as a blow to the republican party, and a breathe of relief for the democrats of New York City.

Subway Countdown Clocks Are Coming...Eventually

Not long ago the city began a project to install countdown clocks on many of the city’s subway stations to help travelers. As one can imagine, the project has quickly become late and over budget.

According to the New York Times, the MTA plans to spend $200 million to install countdown clocks in all “numbered train line stations.” The project will be done on top of the original plan to just put countdown clocks along the 7 line, a project that is three-years late and more than $30 million over budget according to the New York Times.

Fire In Brooklyn Apartment Building Kills 3

A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in a six-story apartment building in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, killing two children and one man.

The fire was reported at 12:27 p.m. on the top floor of the building. Fire fighters started to arrive four minutes later, and managed to get the fire under control at 12:57 p.m. Nearly 70 firefighters and 12 engine and ladder companies responded to the complaint.

The two children and adult were taken to Kings County Hospital in critical condition. They were later pronounced dead. Their names have not yet been released pending an investigation.

Bloomberg Wants Even More Budget Cuts

While New York Governor David Paterson tries to convince the state legislature to cut $3.2 billion from the state budget, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg wants to cut an additional $1.7 billion from the city budget.

Mayor Mike has said that he wants to cut $500 million from this years budget and $1.2 from next year’s.

His plan would involve cutting 1.5% of the education budget, 2% from the “uniformed services” (i.e. cops, firefighters), and 4% from everything else this year.

50 Million Go Hungry in America

While the United States frequently sends food and aid to improvised nations, the government has been ignoring the needs of the hungry here at home.

According to the Department of Agriculture, nearly 50 million people or one in every six Americans, went hungry last year. The rate went up more than four percent from what it had been in 2007.

The United States Department of Agriculture classified “going hungry” as not having enough food or resources for enough food to lead a healthy lifestyle.

NYC High Schools Get Report Card (It’s Not Good)

In the third year of the A-F grade system, the Education Department has handed down plenty of As but numerous C’s and D’s as well.

In total, 40 schools received better grades than they did last year but 67 schools received lower grades and six schools received an F. In total, 7% of New York City public schools received a D or an F.

NYPD Finally Pulls in New Applicants

For a place like New York City, a gigantic police force is a top priority, but in recent years, the NYPD has been unable to generate any interest in this career field. Finally, new numbers show that because of the prolonged recession and an increase in rookie salaries, the number of applications to the Police Academy rose 54 percent.

For a while, the applications have slowed. Many thought they could find better jobs, or safer jobs. Now, however, many people who have been out of work for a while decided to live out their childhood dreams and become police officers.
