Officer Juan Acosta, a nine-year veteran, is facing a life sentence right now for using his status to help a long-time friend, Yorick Rafael Corneil-Perez, run a cocaine ring. Supposedly, Acosta aided in distributing drugs by stealing cash from a rival drug dealer while pretending to be on police business. He would also provide tips on which streets would be heavily patrolled by other officers. In addition, Acosta is accused of transporting 22 pounds of cocaine from Long Island to the Bronx.

Beginning a trend that is expected to hit a number of colleges around the country, Hofstra University has put an end to their lackluster football program citing big financial losses and lack of popularity.

Stuart Rabinowitz, the President of Hofstra University, told the press that while it was a difficult decision to cut the football program, the $4.5 million that the program costs the college annually is much more than the college could ever hope to make in revenues.

Mayor Bloomberg Decides To Drop Initiative To Make City Greener

Recently, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been pushing building owners (whose building are at least 50,000 square feet) to undergo audits to determine where they could cut greenhouse emissions, and pay for the renovations to make those improvements. However, after receiving intense opposition from building owners, the Mayor has left it up to the owners to decide whether or not they would like to go through with the audits.

The reason that building owners do not want to go through with these audits is because they say that the repairs would be way too costly. About 22,000 buildings would have been affected.

Although the same-sex marriage bill in New Jersey has a long way to go, today, a petition signed by more than 2,300 Democratic officials, advocates, and residents, has been helping to sway members of the State Senate Judiciary Committee to legalize gay marriage. The petition was circulated by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which is a liberal political advocacy group.
