State Anti-Smoking Budget Slashed

NY Gov. David Paterson

As Albany begins to nitpick what parts of the budget will be cut, Governor David Paterson is on the verge of cutting funding for a program that he has pioneered more than any other governor in the country, New York’s anti-smoking campaign.

Ever since Paterson came into office, he and New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg have gone after smokers with a vengeance, both through taxes and through advertising.

Ironically, while the Governor’s campaign has been somewhat controversial, the $10 million cut in funding will affect the widely supported state program that provides free nicotine patches and helps …continue reading

Paterson to Make Emergency Cuts

David Paterson

The state legislature has dragged its feet on budget cuts for more than a month and a half, despite the fact that New York is facing a complete economic collapse. Earlier this week, Governor David Paterson took matters into his own hands, going ahead with a plan that would allow him to make $1.6 billion in budget cuts and absorb any fallout by himself.

Seeing that Albany officials were much more worried about their jobs than fiscal responsibility, Paterson began to push for a plan that some have deemed truly courageous while others labeled as political suicide for …continue reading

$96+ Million in Medicaid Waste in NY

Medicare Inspector General James Sheehan

As New York tries to crack down on wasteful spending, a report by the State Medicaid Inspector General shows that there is much fraud going on when it comes to free health insurance for the most needy.

According to the report, $96.7 million in Medicaid funds was misspent with nearly half of it in New York City.

Judges Use Tax Dollars for Personal Items

NY Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman

A New York Post investigation has found that New York judges have been using taxpayer funds to pay for personal things like iPods, portraits, and trips.

Although judges get $10,000 expense allowances (double what they had gotten until this year), they also receive reimbursements for “work-related expenses.” The total of these reimbursements? More than $12.5 million per year.

The investigation found that judges have a tendency of playing it fast and loose with these reimbursements, asking the state to foot the bill for an iPod Touch, a self portrait, and “meditation retreats.”

The Post story details …continue reading

Thompson Running For Senate?

Former Comptroller Bill Thompson

As rumors swirl about former New York City Comptroller William Thompson possibly running on Andrew Cuomo’s ticket in the governor’s race, Thompson is considering running on his own for the Senate.

Thompson’s persona grew when he nearly beat seemingly unbeatable incumbent Mayor Mike Bloomberg in the mayoral race despite being vastly outspent by Bloomberg and is now considering running for office again with much better name recognition.

Most recently, reports have surfaced that Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who is planning to challenge Governor David Paterson in the Democratic Primary, wants to have a prominent African-American official to …continue reading
