Much like Senator Kirsten Gillibrand did herself, potential senate candidate Harold Ford Jr. has begun to flip-flop on the views that he held while being a Senator from Tennessee, a more conservative state.

The first in what will unlikely be a string of position reversals was Ford changing up his position on gay marriage, something that he opposed while living in an anti-gay marriage state.

We all know that politicians will say anything to get elected and seeing Gillibrand and Ford attempt to move from the conservative side to mainstream Democrat has exemplified this perfectly.

After gay marriage was shockingly overturned in California after it was already legalized, New York state senators rebuffed Governor David Paterson who had introduced the bill. The New York State Assembly had overwhelmingly passed the bill before the it was put to a vote in the Senate.

As the dust of the debate settled, gay marriage activists realized that they ...continue reading

Although the same-sex marriage bill in New Jersey has a long way to go, today, a petition signed by more than 2,300 Democratic officials, advocates, and residents, has been helping to sway members of the State Senate Judiciary Committee to legalize gay marriage. The petition was circulated by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which is a liberal political advocacy group.

Among the signees was Senator Raymond J. Lesniak, a Democrat from Union County, who says that the petition produces a strong “momentum change” for the bill, although is has been stalled in the last few weeks. Lesniak is a member of the ...continue reading

The State Senate voted no on a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage on Wednesday, following an emotional debate that touched on civil rights, family values, and American history.

The fact that the senate voted down this bill means that Governor David A. Paterson has failed again, for the year at least. The optimism of gay rights activists, who are facing a lot of setbacks in key states, has been somewhat slashed.

The bill was defeated by a not-so-close margin, 38 to 24. Although the Democrats have a majority, they didn’t have enough votes to be able to pass the bill without any ...continue reading

After disclosing his intent to push for a same-sex marriage bill in Albany months ago, New York Governor David Paterson is finally making good on his promise. Although most expect a gay marriage bill to ultimately fail, activists are glad that the conversation is at least beginning.

Although the State Assembly has already passed a bill to legalize gay marriage, the New York Senate has refused to bring the bill to the floor.

Now that the Democrats are willing to give the bill a go as the election has passed, Paterson is optimistic that gay people will soon have equal rights as they ...continue reading
